Season is a small-scale market garden using natural growing practices with a mission to provide nutritious vegetables, unique flower varietals, and flavorful herbs to elevate home cooking and dining experiences alike.
I've worked the last decade as a Registered Nurse and before that many years in the hospitality and service industry. It's incredibly rewarding to be in the service of others. As I've learned more about the role nutrition has on overall health, I want to encourage others to become more hands on. Health is our personal responsibility and we have more control than we may think. There are many reasons to care where your food comes from and to source what you eat locally from those who do it well. Why? Because to support your local community is to also support yourself.
I still consider myself a novice grower. And there are many challenges, failures, and regrets seasonally in the garden. But that's what makes it so, so sweet when you get it right. I credit many influences for the no-dig, natural practices I use in the garden. Food grown without use of pesticides is difficult but not impossible. Focusing on the health and structure of the soil allows for diverse and intensive planting. Mimicking nature in this way encourages a robust and fruitful landscape full of flowers, food, and creatures.
I find something so humbling, and yet incredibly rewarding about growing and cooking food. And I love food. I love flavors. I love combing ingredients to get that perfect bite or unforgettable meal. Homegrown food just tastes better. Its ripeness, color, amora. Everything about farm to table eating and presentation appeals to me. As the season changes, so does what's growing, and so does what we fuel our bodies with.
My hope is to share with you all of the lovely things.
Our market garden is located in Allegan County, Michigan. We are just outside of what is considered the Lake Michigan Shore AVA wine region, which affords us a longer, more productive growing season. We're also near several regional crossroads, making pickups and deliveries to the greater West Michigan area very convenient.
We try to mimic what nature does best with natural growing practices, "No Dig" gardening, and companion planting. Our goal is to leave the land better than we found it by rejuvenating our soil with each planting cycle.
West Michigan has a vibrant food scene. We believe in supporting our local restaurants, both as customers and suppliers, so that they can flourish. And we strive to complement rather than compete with our neighboring food producers.
Food should taste good. It's really that simple. Fresh is best, and the more herbs the better. If we can provide people with more flavor in each meal, then we have succeeded in our mission.
We eat with our eyes first; so make it pretty. We've learned a colorful plate is a nutritious plate, but sometimes adding flare for flare sake is just as important to how your food tastes.
